Banking Scam

This warning was recently issued by NatWest. Banking customers should be alert to current scams which could result in your financial loss. A common scam involves an overpayment on the pretext of an error by a prospective client. This is commonly followed by a request, usually by email, for the overpayment to be returned electronically. This is just an example and scams can take a variety of forms.
You can protect your business by being vigilant at all times. Remember, if something appears too good to be true then it usually is. Always undertake appropriate checks to ensure you know who you are dealing with, and do not release goods or funds unless you can be certain that any payments to you cannot be returned unpaid. Do not issue refunds on cheques until at least 7 working days have elapsed. Fraudsters can be persuasive, so be particularly alert when pressured to release goods or funds before you are able to undertake essential checks. 

WARNING re 192.com

Warning re 192.com. In my personal experience, I found this website confusing. You pay for credits; £11+ for six. You then try to search the Electoral Register but there doesn’t seem any difference between that and the free search, either in page layout or results, so you try again, searching the same name and or address – result you have lost two credits. One would have expected a warning that a credit was being used, or possibly the search button to be labelled, ‘Use Credit’, but neither is the case. Take heed, it is very easy to use up credits unintentionally. One further point; you may think that you would be able to view the register for a particular electoral division and scroll through it – you can’t! You can only search for an individual and view the results for that name.

Diary of a Work Experience Student

As a firm with strong local connections we really enjoy helping out the local schools, colleges and universities by offering work experience places to their students. This week we have welcomed Lauren Key, aged 14, from Selston Arts and Community College. She is considering going into the legal profession and wanted to gain a little bit of an understanding of how a legal office works. We have asked her to contribute to our blog so give you an insight into her week with us and what she has accomplished.

Ladies and Gentlemen………………I present Miss Lauren Key:-

I go to a local school, and I recently applied for a work experience placement at QualitySolicitors Chapman and Chubb. I was very nervous on my first day, mainly because I didn’t really know what to expect and I had never met the people who work here before. When I arrived everyone was very welcoming and friendly, and I quickly adjusted to the new environment and surroundings. I believe that my confidence has built during my time here at Chapman and Chubb.

Throughout my time here, everyone has been extremely helpful wherever help was needed. The atmosphere in Chapman and Chubb was very friendly; everyone who works here is approachable. I have deeply enjoyed my time here (and don’t really want to leave), I would definitely recommend this business to anyone who needs legal help or if, like me, you want to look into that field of work and see what it is like.

I did a variety of different tasks during my time at Chapman and Chubb, which are as follows:-

·        I did some filing;

·        I was able to sit with Aileen, whilst she was with clients quite a few times

·        I read through a couple of files, which helped me gain a greater understanding of what solicitors do and how they work.

·        I sat at reception on a few occasions, I helped with general office tasks such as shredding, post and switchboard operation

·        I made drinks for staff

·        On one occasion I had to phone another solicitor and find out some information

·        I got the opportunity to listen to some dictation notes and write them up into letters for clients and other businesses.

Everyday I was learning something new. This for me was extremely important.

By joining Chapman and Chubb for a week, I have gained an insight into what solicitors do. There is a variety of departments to work in, in this field of work. It has not only given me the experience of what work life is really like, but it has given me a greater understanding of what I want to achieve when I am older. 

Mediation - What is it?

Mediation will become statutory in the new divorce process that comes into law from April 5^th 2011. For those who have never heard of it or know little about it, here are some simple details about the mediation process offered by QualitySolicitors Chapman & Chubb

Mediation is a process by which couples try to make decision and reach agreement in relation to practical problems facing them when their relationships break down i.e. financial support, division of assets, and arrangements for children. They do this with the support and guidance of a specially trained and impartial third person called a mediator.

Instead of each person hiring a solicitor to negotiate on their behalf the mediator will help separating couples discuss together the best solution for their family in an informal environment to reach an amicable agreement which is fair and just.

Mediation is much quicker and less expensive that Court Proceedings; the average cost of a settlement by mediation is about 70% less that the cost of conventional Court Proceedings, and where the couple is eligible for legal aid for mediation, the statutory charge does not apply. In short, the couple end up keeping much more of their own money.

Mediation is normally concluded with 4-6 sessions each lasting about 1½ hours. Court proceedings relating to the same issues last on average 6-12 months.

Mediation is confidential so that the proposals can be discussed freely and openly, without fear.

Mediation is of particular benefit if there are children involved. The mediation process helps to support the parental relationship, enabling parents to discuss matters together for the benefit of their children making it more likely that they will be able to co-operate with each other as ‘mum and dad’ for the sake of the children, even if their relationship has broken down.

Mediation enables couples to focus on resolving their problems in a constructive rather than destructive way, aiming to minimise hostility and conflict and reduce emotional stress.

Mediation enables couples to agree arrangements which are right for them rather than have solutions imposed on them by the Courts or the judicial system. The mediator will help to ensure that any agreement is realistic and viable.

Legal aid is available for mediation but you will need to speak with your solicitor or mediator to see if you or your partner qualifies. The preliminary meeting is free of charge in any event. Even if neither of you qualify the costs of mediation will usually be much less than for conventional proceedings.

Mediation is charged for on a session by session basis, each session usually about 90 minutes in length – on average 2-6 sessions are needed depending on the complexity and nature of the problems.
